WHAT IS SAFE SPACE UGANDA?


Safe Space Uganda abbreviated as “SASU” is a Uganda based Youth-focused not-for-profit non-government organization.

At SASU, we define Safe space as a society where everyone attains full potential and sustainable financial freedom, good health and peace.  A society in which People have hope, liberty, freedom and believe in possibilities irrespective of their age, faith, region of birth, sex, sex orientation, political opinion etc. - We appreciate and celebrate diversity.

We define being in a safe space as when natural resources benefit us today without compromising future generations

We recognize how youth need to be in a safe space and appreciate their role in working towards achieving that society we all desire. 

At SASU, we are involved in programs that promote Youth contribution towards creating a safe space, we engage Youth in Environment Protection &Climate Change mitigation, Sexual & Reproductive Health Rights advocacy, East Africa Community Integration Promotion and we run Youth Economic Empowerment programs.

At SASU we believe that educated, facilitated and networked young people possess the power to solve world’s toughest problems.


WHY YOUTH?


  • Youth are the most valuable asset of human kind,

  • Youth are inheritors of this world- shall be here after we have gone

  • Youth are leaders of tomorrow

  • If we invest in youth, we shall have protected and preserved human kind

  • Youth are the biggest population group

  • Transition from young to adulthood is a fragile process that needs solid attention.



HOW DO WE ENGAGE YOUTH?

Other than running Youth economic empowerment programs, that include but limited to training in computer use, computer mechanics, home appliances mechanics, carpentry, business management, welding and business start-up seed capital, Safe Space Uganda engages youth in the three thematic areas-  (1) Environment Protection & Climate Change Mitigation, (2) Sexual & Reproductive health Rights Advocacy (3) East African Community Integration Promotion.

For each of our three thematic areas, Safe Space Uganda has developed a handbook that analyses the current state.

SASU USES TOW APPROACHED

APPROACH ONE: SASU directly engages youth in discussion about a particular thematic area,

APPROACH TWO: SASU engages community, faith leaders & teachers- these serve youth communities.


APPROACH ONE: DIRECTLY ENGAGING YOUTH IN DISCUSSION.


This is done through youth-focused workshops, seminars, meetings, village-city tours, holiday camps etc.


Step one: Using our handbook (s), Youth are introduced to understanding of the current national status of one of our thematic areas,

Step two: Among youth themselves, make a localized analysis of the current status of the thematic area in question.


Step three: Youth come up with local solutions


Step four:  youth come up with an action plan to implement their local solutions,


Step five: SASU facilitates and supervises implantation of these local solutions


Step six: SASU evaluate impact of the implemented local solutions


Step seven: if Local solutions prove effective, SASU publishes and facilitates solution formulators to disseminate and replicate their solution (s) in other parts of the country.


APPROACH TWO: ENGAGES COMMUNITY, FAITH LEADERS & TEACHERS.

Step 1: Leaders are trained in SASU approach,

Step 2: Using our handbook (s), Leaders are introduced to understanding of the current national status of one or two of our thematic areas,

Step 3: Each Leader (s) come up with Youth engagement plan for their respective institutions,

Step 4: SASU assigns each institution a contact person to assist in implementation of the institutional youth engagement plan,

Step 5: Institution receives SASU handbooks for thematic areas to be covered by the institution,

Step 6: Under facilitation of institution leaders, using SASU handbook (s), Youth are introduced to understanding of the current national status of one of our thematic areas,

Step 7: Among youth themselves, make a localized analysis of the current status of the thematic area in question,


Step 8: Youth come up with local solutions

Step 9:  youth come up with an action plan to implement their local solutions,

Step 10: SASU facilitates and supervises implantation of these local solutions
